On October 17, 2010 the Afghan Social Marketing Organization (ASMO) was formally launched as a fully independent Afghan-owned and Afghan-managed NGO. During 2009 and early 2010, IDEAS had assisted the staff of the USAID’s COMPRI-A Project to formulate a comprehensive business plan for ASMO, which was approved by USAID in July 2001. Formed by most of the Afghan staff of USAID’s COMPRI-A Project, ASMO has five main departments: Program Development, Behavior Change Communication, Training/Community Outreach, Administration/Finance, and Procurement/Logistics. It is now responsible for most of the activities of the COMPRI-A Project under a sub-contract with Futures Group. ASMO also has a consultancy contract with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) to oversee and coordinate a formative research program in preparation for a GAIN-supported micronutrient supplementation program targeting children between 6 and 24 months of age.
