In October, 2011, during its Public-Private Partnership Week, USAID highlighted interesting PPP initiatives around the world. Among those singled out for recognition was the multi-sectoral effort to improve access to quality hospital services in Afghanistan, in which IDEAS has played a significant role. Under a sub-contract with Management Sciences for Health, IDEAS worked with the Afghan Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) to incorporate PPPs into the national private health sector policy and strategic plan and introduced PPPs successfully on a small scale. IDEAS is currently assisting in establishing a PPP Steering Committee and orienting its members—representatives of relevant ministries, the private sector, and investment banks—to increase their knowledge of PPPs in general and their awareness of further PPP opportunities in the health sector. IDEAS is also contributing to the creation of PPP units in the Ministries of Public Health and Finance and the design of the complex procurement processes.
