IDEAS staff member Ann Buxbaum edited “Time to Move on: Developing an Informed Development Response to Opium Poppy Cultivation in Afghanistan,” the recent publication of the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit (AREU). This study suggests a new way forward for analysis and policy, based on an in-depth understanding of livelihoods in rural Afghanistan and the multi-faceted role that opium poppy plays. The study surveyed farmers in the field and used high-resolution imagery and geospatial mapping to visualize the effect of changes in settlements, cropping patterns, livelihoods options, politics and power on farmers’ decision-making.
